We registered Abby to take the Canine Good Neighbour Test today and she PASSED! This is an evaluation by the Canadian Kennel Club and Sponsored by the local River Valley Obedience and Field Trial Club. The evaluation involves testing in 12 areas:
1. Accepting a friendly stranger
2. Politely accepts petting
3. Appearance and grooming (letting a stranger examine and groom)
4. Out for a walk (walks politely on a loose leash)
5. Walking through a crowd
6. Sit/down on command and stay in place
7. Come when called
8. Praise and attention (calming dog down after a play session)
9. Reaction to a passing dog
10. Reaction to distractions
11. Supervised isolation (leaving dog with a stranger for 3 minutes while you leave the area)
12. Walking through a door/gate (tests owner ability to control dog)
We really did not think that Miss Biz would pass but given that they only administer the test once a year we wanted to see how well she would do so decided make an appointment. She surprised us! The test takes about 15 minutes and is administered in a large ring with the dog, owner and the evaluator only (for the crowd assessment, they bring about 10 extra people in the ring with a baby stroller, an umbrella, someone walking a dog etc. and you walk your dog around/in the crowd). On the outside of the ring are all the observers!! We know Abby is very social and would pass most of the testing elements but we did wonder about the distraction testing (she loves to check things out) and how she would make out staying with a stranger while Mamma left the ring and went behind a wall out of sight! She sat with eyes focused on the wall that mamma was hiding behind, she did start to whine but stopped and sat very nicely with the stranger for the required 3 minutes. She was such a good girl, doing all the right things at the right time!!! We will get our Canine Good Neighbour Certificate in the mail in a few weeks.
The picture above was taken one evening last week when we were walking on the city trail and stopped for an ice cream cone. Abby has been getting lots of use from her swimming pool the past couple of weeks as the temperatures have been in the 30's. She had a nice long walk along the river this morning (where we tried to practise for the test!!). She is now laying on her bed watching the Purina Incredible Dog Challenge on TV. We are on the couch watching our incredible dog laying on her bed in front of us. Until next time....
