The Dog Park: Abby has discovered that she has lots of friends at the City Dog Park! Dogs under 4 months of age are not allowed at the park so we have only been taking Abby to the park for about 3 weeks. At first we were a bit hesitant because there appeared to be so many dogs of various sizes running loose and we didn't want little Abby to get hurt, okay I didn't want little Abby to get hurt. At first we drove across the river to the park to sit and observe the other doggies to see how they all interacted with each other and how a new dog was accepted when it entered through the gate. After a few minutes of watching the other dogs and their owners Abby let us know that SHE wanted in on all the action. So with some hesitation we entered the park and were met by the unofficial canine welcoming committee. Large dogs, medium dogs, small dogs, old dogs, young dogs, shy dogs, in your face dogs.....and our little Abby! Within seconds little Abby was running around and enjoying the fun, she is very social so was right in the middle of all the action. She does not care if she is the smallest or the biggest dog, she just finds a few dogs to play with and away she goes. There is a little dog that looks just like Abby who is often there when we arrive. Duke is a boxer/lab mix (picture above with Abby) and is about 5 months old and from a distance it is hard to tell them apart. Abby loves to play with Duke and if he is in the park when we arrive she can pick him out immediately. If he arrives while we are there, she runs to the gate to meet him.
Some of the other parents at the park have commented on Abby's different coloured eyes and her unique markings and of course we already think she is the cutest dog at the park so we welcome the nice comments!! LOL The City has scheduled a second dog park to be constructed on the South side in January 2011 so that should be much closer for us. It is our understanding that the new park will be double in size and will include trees within the fenced area.
This is our first real experience with the City Dog Park because our other loyal companions were content to run in their own yard and never felt the need to hop the fence and visit our neighbors like Miss Abby does! So until the snow has melted away from the fence, Abby has to be on a leash outside in her own yard and we will continue taking her to the dog park for daily runs (and visits with Duke).
This afternoon we are taking Abby to meet our friends who are going to keep her for a couple of weeks while we are on vacation. We are very happy that we did not have to put her in a kennel for 2 weeks and that she is going to a home where someone is home all day and there are no other dogs, cats or kids so she will be the center of attention! Lucky girl! We have written an entire page of instructions and contact names and I think have put more energy into getting her ready to stay here than we have in getting ready for vacation! We will miss her while we are away but know that she will be well cared for. The cats will be on vacation too having full run of the house for 2 whole weeks. They probably are hoping that Abby is finally going home! tee hee
